Leave Estimator

Pay, job protection, and benefits are three different clocks, and the date pay ends is not the date the job is protected until. Here is the floor the law guarantees. Your contract almost certainly grants more.

From your payroll system. The paid product sanity-checks this figure instead of trusting it.

No data leaves your browser. Deterministic rules, no model, nothing stored. Version-stamped so you can cite the calculator, not just the answer.

Three clocks, statutory floor

illustrative · calendar days
Pay
When the paycheck changes
Accumulated sick leave (30 days)
Full pay until accumulated sick leave exhausts, counted in duty days.
Differential pay — five school months
Salary minus the substitute's cost, once per illness, once per fiscal year — under the § 44977 model.
A § 44983 district instead pays 50% from day eleven, concurrent with sick leave. Same question, different arithmetic — selected by district policy.
Job protection
When the right to return ends
FMLA / CFRA — 12 workweeks, concurrent
Twelve workweeks of job protection in a 12-month period, counted in duty days: school breaks do not consume the entitlement.
Benefits
When the premium duty ends
Health premium duty ends
Group health coverage on the same terms as if working, for the protected period.
Notices the law requires from you
  • Eligibility notice due
  • Rights & responsibilities notice due
  • Designation notice due

Five business days. A designation notice that never goes out can mean the twelve weeks never legally start — and can move the eligibility measuring date on the next leave.

Counted in calendar days here. The paid product counts duty days against your school calendar and denominates the ledger in your payroll increment.
Here is what the statute guarantees

Your CBA may grant more — a separate parental-leave bucket, a catastrophic leave bank, a longer differential. Connect it and we'll tell you exactly, in duty days, in hours.
